Abstract   Authors have reviewed 231 Patients of early gastric adenocarcinoma(EGC) surgically treated at the Department of surgery in Presbyterian Medical Center, Chonju, from January, 1978 to December, 1990. Obtained results were as follows: I ) The incidence of EGC among the surgically treated patients was 17.1%(231/1348). 2) The sex ratio of male to female was 2: 1 comprising male 154 Patients and female 77 pa tients. The peak age of EGC was 5th decade consisted of 81 patients. 3) The major blood types of EGC was A types(38.5%). 4) The most common site of EGC was the lesser curvature of lower one third(antral area, 68 patients) and followed by the lesser curvature of mid one third(51 patients). 5) The most common size of the tumor was 1.1-2cm, comprising 77 patients(34.2%). The larger than 3cm in size, the more deeply invasion into the submucosa layer(p<0.05) and the larger than 3 cm in size, the more lymphnode metastasis(p < 0.05) were noticed. 6) The rate of lymphnode metastasis in the lower one third of EGC was 39% in group I nodes and 19% in group II nodes of the resected stomachs. 7) The rate of lymphnode metastasis in the mid one third of EGC was each Zl/ in group I and II. 8) The highest incidence of lymhnode metastasis was occurred in the types of IIc+ III. 9) The most common histopathologic type of EGC was tubular type with moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma(77 patients). 10) The overall 5-year cumulative survival rate of EGC was 93.2%.
